VPS Technology

Most Web Hosting companies offer "SHARED" hosting. This means you literally share your resources, applications (software) and environment with other users in the same directory. There is nothing wrong with this type of design; in fact, most websites are hosted on shared servers. It's the main reason websites cost so little these days. However, the down side is that this configuration can allow any compromises to a single website to affect the performance and security of everyone else on the same server.

In the past, customers had to justify the higher costs associated with a VPS website because the cost was much higher than share hosting plans. Now 1849WebHosting has blurred the line between shared hosting and VPS hosting. VPS plans generally cost more than shared plans, but our affordable pricing structure has narrowed that pricing difference. Now customers who were previously considering only high-end shared hosting plans are now able to also consider our Starter VPS plan.

With our Virtual Private Server (VPS Hosting) Technology, also known as Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) technology, a web server is divided into multiple isolated environments (sub-servers). Each environment has its own server software providing independence for that website. Any compromise to a site would only affect that VPS website only and could not affect any other site on that same server. As with a full dedicated server, each VPS has its own independent operating system with it's own web server, mail server and independent software installations. A crashed application (Apache, Sendmail, MySQL etc.) in another client's VPS website has no effect on your VPS website.

What may be even more appealing is that with our VPS web hosting, you have nearly full control over the most common areas of a website/server. This includes:

Full control of the web server configuration (Apache), including PHP, mod_perl, and other server-side technologies and modules.
Full control of the e-mail server (Sendmail) configuration.
Full control of MySQL configuration.
Full control of most Perl modules.

You also have access to other miscellaneous configuration files within your account and a greater ability to install and run custom software (should you choose to).

Because of the superior architecture of VPS servers, their performance will always be better than that found on any shared server.
